Couples Therapy

There are many choices when it comes to finding a couples therapist, and different therapists utilize differing methodologies. I have found through my years of treating couples that using a method that has research based outcomes is the most successful in helping couples. I believe the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy is the most effective.

I work with opposite and same sex couples. I also provide affair recovery services. If you are unsure whether or not you want to stay married I can help you through that decision making process, and I can also help if the decision to separate or divorce has already been made but a co-parenting relationship is struggling. I also provide pre-marital counseling.

Couples therapy, also known as marriage counseling or relationship therapy, is a form of psychotherapy designed to help couples improve their relationship, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their emotional connection. This therapy is conducted by a licensed therapist who specializes in working with couples.

Key Aspects of Couples Therapy:

  1. Communication Improvement:
    • Helps couples develop better communication skills, express their needs, and listen to each other more effectively.
  2. Conflict Resolution:
    • Provides tools and strategies to manage and resolve conflicts in a healthy and constructive manner.
  3. Rebuilding Trust:
    • Assists couples in rebuilding trust, especially after breaches like infidelity or significant disagreements.
  4. Emotional Connection:
    • Aims to deepen the emotional intimacy and understanding between partners.
  5. Addressing Specific Issues:
    • Tackles specific issues like financial stress, parenting disagreements, sexual concerns, or life transitions.
  6. Preventive Care:
    • Can also be used as a preventive measure to strengthen a relationship before issues become major problems.

Types of Approaches in Couples Therapy:

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): Focuses on identifying and addressing emotional responses and patterns in the relationship.
  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Works on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that affect the relationship.
  • Gottman Method: Based on research, this method helps couples build love maps, manage conflict, and create shared goals.
  • Imago Relationship Therapy: Explores how past relationships and experiences influence current behavior and interaction patterns.

Couples therapy is tailored to the specific needs of the couple, helping them navigate challenges, enhance their relationship, and work towards a healthier, more fulfilling partnership.
